Redbelt
People don’t really talk like David Mamet writes, but that’s OK. We can always try. His words are carefully chosen and have weight. His characters say just enough. If you’re trying to recall whether you’ve seen some of his movies before, consider Glengarry Glen Ross.
“Coffee is for closers.”
I love his movies. “The Spanish Prisoner” (the best thing Steve Martin ever did). “Things Change” (a wonderful gangster tale), “Heist” (Who doesn’t love a complicated and thrilling heist where the crooks are the smarter and more violent than most you’ll find anywhere else). “House of Games” (stands alone as a classic of the con) .
See “Red Belt” This is the most recent and it’s a wonderful surprise. Con men, gangsters and thugs always have a place in his movies but in this case they’re disguised as movie folk, athletes and sports promoters. There’s some violence here, but it has it’s purpose . An excellent choice for a weekend rental.
